A legislative panel in Andhra Pradesh has recommended that the zoos in Tirupati and Visakhapatnam be upgraded following the design and management principles of Singapore’s Mandai wildlife reserve.
The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s standing committee on tourism and wildlife has submitted a proposal to modernise the zoological parks at Tirupati and Visakhapatnam. The recommendation calls for adopting the layout, animal welfare standards and visitor experience concepts used at Singapore’s Mandai wildlife reserve, which is internationally recognised for its conservation‑focused design.
According to the panel’s report, the Mandai model emphasises spacious, naturalistic enclosures, advanced veterinary facilities and educational outreach programmes. Replicating these features is expected to boost tourism, improve animal health and create new employment opportunities in the state’s wildlife sector.
The proposal will now be examined by the state cabinet, which will decide on funding allocations and implementation timelines. If approved, the upgrades could begin within the next financial year, aligning with Andhra Pradesh’s broader push to enhance its eco‑tourism infrastructure.
