The Andhra Pradesh High Court has reserved its judgment on a petition that seeks to suspend local body elections citing issues with the Backward Classes quota.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has reserved its verdict on a petition filed by a group of voters and political activists who argue that the current Backward Classes quota system is being misused in local body elections.

The petition, submitted in 2023, claims that the quota allocation has been manipulated to favor certain parties, thereby compromising the fairness of the electoral process. It seeks a temporary suspension of all pending local body polls until a comprehensive review of the quota framework can be conducted.

In its order, the court noted that the matter involves complex constitutional questions about reservation policies and electoral integrity. It directed the relevant authorities to provide a detailed report on the alleged irregularities within 30 days.

The court will consider the report and other submissions before delivering a final decision. Until then, all scheduled local body elections will proceed as planned.
