Indian chess player Anuj Shrivatri has secured the Grandmaster title, marking the 100th such achievement for the country.
Anuj Shrivatri has been officially recognised as a Grandmaster by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), becoming the hundredth Indian to attain the prestigious title. The achievement underscores the growing depth of talent in Indian chess, which has produced a steady stream of elite players over the past two decades.
The Grandmaster title is awarded to players who meet stringent criteria, including earning three performance norms in international events and achieving a FIDE rating of 2500 at some point. Shrivatri satisfied these requirements through consistent performances in recent tournaments, earning the necessary norms and crossing the rating threshold.
His elevation to Grandmaster adds to India’s expanding roster of top‑level chess professionals and is expected to inspire younger aspirants across the country. The chess community has welcomed the milestone, noting that reaching a century of Grandmasters reflects the nation’s rising stature on the global chess stage.
FIDE’s official rating list now records Shrivatri among the elite, and his next steps will involve competing in higher‑profile events to further improve his standing and represent India in international team competitions.
