The state government will commission the initial phase of the Veligonda irrigation scheme on August 31, with a compensation package of ₹250 crore earmarked for families displaced by the project.
Andhra Pradesh officials have announced that the first phase of the Veligonda irrigation project will be commissioned on 31 August. The scheme, designed to augment water supply for agriculture in the Veligonda region, is expected to boost irrigation potential across several mandals.
The government has allocated a total of ₹250 crore as compensation for families that were relocated during the construction of the project. Payments are being made directly to the affected households as part of the rehabilitation package.
State authorities said the inauguration will be marked by a ceremony at the project’s main canal, underscoring the administration’s focus on rural development and water security. The rollout of the first phase is slated to begin water releases shortly after the ceremony.
The compensation effort reflects the government’s commitment to address displacement concerns while advancing large‑scale infrastructure. Officials have urged beneficiaries to complete the necessary documentation to receive their allotted shares.
The Veligonda project forms a key component of Andhra Pradesh’s broader water‑resource strategy, aimed at stabilising agricultural output in drought‑prone areas.
