Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting with the chief ministers of Chhattisgarh and Odisha to discuss the ongoing Mahanadi water dispute.
New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high‑level meeting with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to address the long‑standing Mahanadi water sharing issue. The three leaders examined the existing inter‑state agreement and explored possible adjustments to ensure equitable water allocation for irrigation, drinking and industrial needs.
Both state governments reiterated their concerns over seasonal water scarcity and the impact on agriculture in the basin. Shah emphasized the central government's willingness to facilitate a mutually acceptable solution and suggested forming a technical committee to monitor river flow and discharge data.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to reconvene after the technical committee submits its preliminary report, signalling a continued diplomatic effort to prevent further tensions over the river's resources.
