Alstom reports that 30% of its global engineering operations are now located in India, a shift driven by the new locomotive factory in Madhepura, Bihar.
French rail equipment maker Alstom has announced that nearly one‑third of its worldwide engineering capacity is now based in India. The increase is largely attributed to the commissioning of its locomotive manufacturing facility in Madhepura, Bihar, which has become a hub for design, testing and production activities.
The Madhepura plant, operational since early 2024, employs a sizable engineering workforce and integrates advanced digital tools to support Alstom’s global projects. By relocating a significant share of engineering tasks to India, the company aims to tap into local talent, reduce development costs and accelerate delivery timelines for both domestic and export orders.
Industry analysts view the move as a milestone for India’s high‑tech manufacturing sector, signalling confidence in the country’s ability to host complex engineering operations. Alstom expects the expanded Indian base to contribute to its overall growth strategy and to strengthen the nation’s position in the global rail market.
