Alleged Unscientific Jaladhare Project Work Blamed for Road Accident: Two Killed; Protest Held on State Highway
Demand for compensation as bodies were not taken from hospital; protest withdrawn after assurances from taluk administration and Jaladhare officials
Jalahalli, Sept. 24: Two persons were killed and two others seriously injured in a tragic road accident that occurred on Wednesday night on the State Highway near J.J. Kalyana Mantapa in Jalahalli town, Devadurga taluk, Raichur district.
The four persons were involved in the accident after a Bolero vehicle collided with them. Ningayya (18) of Hosuru Siddapur village and Hanumayya (48) of Gopalapur, Jalahalli, died on the spot. The two injured persons were shifted to RIMS Hospital in Raichur for further treatment.
Anger Over Alleged Unscientific Work
Relatives of the deceased, members of the public and leaders of various organisations staged a protest on the State Highway on Thursday, alleging that the accident was caused by the failure to take necessary safety precautions during the Jaladhare Project (JJM) works being carried out along the State Highway.
The protesters alleged that open pits had been left along the roadside without proper warning boards, barricades and other necessary safety arrangements, posing a serious risk to motorists.
“Since the work site was not clearly visible to motorists at night, the accident occurred. Legal action should be taken against the officials and contractors responsible for failing to take necessary precautionary measures while carrying out the work,” the protesters demanded.
Demand for ₹10 Lakh Compensation to Each Deceased Family
The protesters demanded compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and sought registration of cases and appropriate legal action against those allegedly responsible for negligence in the project work.
As part of the protest, the relatives and members of the public refused to take the bodies from the hospital and staged a protest on the State Highway. Traffic movement was disrupted for some time.
Narasanna Nayak and advocate Basanagouda Desai addressed the protesters and spoke about the demand for compensation.
Protest Withdrawn Following Assurance by Officials
Taluk administration officials, Jaladhare Project officials including AEE Heeralal and Basavaraj, along with police personnel, visited the spot and held discussions with the protesters.
The protest was withdrawn after the officials assured the protesters regarding compensation to the families of the deceased and promised to ensure necessary safety measures at the project work sites.
DYSP Dattatreya, CPI Pundalik Hoskerappa, Jalahalli PSI Vaishali Jalaki and other police personnel and concerned officials were present at the spot.
Several local leaders and residents participated in the protest, including Smt. Sridevi Nayak, advocate Basanagouda Desai, Veeranna Bale Sahukar, Narasanna Nayak, Chandappa Buddhinni, Manappa Kavali, Maktum Parashi, Venkanna Yarakamatti, Shantappa Bale, Khurshid Patel, Hanumayya, Bheemanagouda, Shankargouda, Hussain Nasi, Haider Saab Mulla, Yamanurappa Karnal, Mounesh Hosuru, Basavaraj Hosuru, Ranganna Kolakar, Bheemanna Gumedar, Sridhar Desai, Nandappa P.
