The Allahabad High Court warned Uttar Pradesh police that any misconduct towards government advocates will be deemed contempt of court.
In a recent order, the Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh police to refrain from any form of misbehaviour towards government advocates, stating that such conduct would amount to contempt of court. The bench emphasized that the dignity of the legal process must be upheld and that the police, as custodians of law and order, are expected to cooperate fully with the judiciary.
The court clarified that contempt proceedings can be initiated if the police persist in actions that intimidate, harass, or obstruct government lawyers while they perform their duties. Penalties may include fines, imprisonment, or disciplinary action against the errant officers, underscoring the seriousness with which the judiciary views such infractions.
The warning follows a series of complaints lodged by government counsel alleging instances of verbal abuse and undue pressure by police officials during court proceedings. While the High Court did not disclose specific cases, it urged the police department to ensure that all interactions with legal representatives remain respectful and within the bounds of the law.
The Uttar Pradesh police spokesperson acknowledged the court's directive and pledged to brief senior officers on the order, assuring that appropriate measures will be taken to prevent any recurrence of contemptuous behaviour.
