Akhada Teams Begin Traditional Weapon Drills for Durga Puja in Barabati, Balasore

Balasore, Odisha – In preparation for this year's Durga Puja, several akhada teams gathered at Barabati to commence rehearsals with traditional weapons such as swords, lathis and shields. The practice sessions are being overseen by senior martial instructors who aim to preserve the region's cultural heritage while ensuring safety during the public displays.

The akhadas, which are community-based martial groups, have historically performed weapon drills during major festivals, adding a martial flavor to the religious festivities. Organisers of the Barabati Durga Puja committee have coordinated the timings to avoid clashes with other puja events and have invited local residents to witness the rehearsals.

Spectators are expected to see the fully choreographed performances during the main puja days, where the akhadas will showcase their skill in front of the Durga idol and the gathering crowd. The initiative reflects a broader effort across Odisha to keep traditional arts alive amid modern celebrations.
