The Ajmer Municipal Corporation will hold its mayoral election today, with all 80 council seats participating in the vote. The council comprises 37 Congress councillors, 32 from the Bharatiya Janata Party and 11 independents. To claim the mayor's office, a party must secure at least 41 votes, the majority threshold.
Congress, currently the largest single bloc, falls short of the magic number by four votes. It will therefore need the backing of at least four independent councillors to cross the majority line. The BJP, with 32 seats, faces a larger gap and must gather support from nine independents to achieve the same goal.
Both parties are expected to negotiate with the independents in the hours leading up to the ballot, as the outcome will determine which political formation will control Ajmer's civic administration for the next term.
