Scientists say fine particles in Delhi’s smog can travel beyond the lungs and affect the pancreas, raising new health concerns.

A recent scientific assessment has highlighted that the fine particulate matter constituting Delhi’s notorious smog does not remain confined to the respiratory system. Researchers observed that these particles can migrate through the bloodstream and accumulate in the pancreas, potentially disrupting its function.

The finding adds a new dimension to the already serious health impacts of air pollution, which has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular ailments for years. Experts caution that prolonged exposure may increase the risk of metabolic disorders, including diabetes, though further research is needed to quantify the exact risk.

Public health officials in the capital have reiterated the need for stricter emission controls and personal protective measures, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. The study underscores the urgency of tackling air quality to safeguard not just lungs but other vital organs as well.

Authorities are expected to review current pollution mitigation strategies in light of the new evidence, aiming to reduce the concentration of harmful particles across the city.

Meanwhile, citizens are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak smog periods and to use certified masks that filter fine particles, as part of broader preventive steps.
