Air India Names Tewolde Gebremariam as New CEO, Ending PIA Speculation

Air India has appointed Ethiopian-born Tewolde Gebremariam as its chief executive officer, a move that follows speculation about Pakistan International Airlines taking over the carrier.
Air India announced on 5 September 2024 that Tewolde Gebremariam will assume the role of chief executive officer, succeeding the outgoing leadership team.
Gebremariam, a seasoned aviation executive, previously served as the chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, where he oversaw a period of rapid growth and international expansion. He has also held senior positions in the airline industry, bringing a wealth of experience in operations, finance and strategic planning.
The appointment comes as Air India seeks to reverse a decade of financial losses and restore profitability. The airline has been undergoing a restructuring programme, with the government and private investors looking for a leader who can navigate the complex regulatory and commercial environment.
Industry analysts expect Gebremariam to focus on cost optimisation, fleet renewal and strengthening the airline’s domestic and international route network. The new CEO will begin his mandate in the coming weeks, with a roadmap for the next 12 months already in development.
