AIMIM willing to join anti-BJP alliance in Uttar Pradesh, says Owaisi

All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi said the party is open to partnering with any group that aims to keep the BJP out of power in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.
New Delhi, Sep 21 (ET) – Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), told reporters that his party is ready to form an alliance with any political formation whose primary goal is to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from winning the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.
The statement came ahead of the final phase of candidate nominations, as parties across the state scramble to consolidate anti‑BJP votes. Owaisi did not name specific partners but emphasized that the AIMIM would consider any coalition that shares a common objective of curbing the BJP's influence.
Political analysts note that AIMIM, which has a modest but growing presence in several Uttar Pradesh districts, could become a swing factor in closely contested constituencies if it aligns with larger regional parties. The party's openness to an anti‑BJP front adds another variable to the already complex electoral calculations in the state.
The BJP, which currently holds a dominant position in the state assembly, has not yet responded to Owaisi's remarks. The Election Commission is expected to announce the final list of candidates later this week.
