A roundtable convened by AIIMS Patna urged the health system to provide uninterrupted, coordinated services for pregnant women and newborns.
New Delhi, September 30 — Leading obstetrics and neonatology specialists gathered at AIIMS Patna for a roundtable discussion on maternal and newborn health. The participants examined gaps in the current care pathway and agreed that a seamless continuum—from antenatal check‑ups through delivery to post‑natal follow‑up—is essential to improve outcomes.
The forum highlighted the need for integrated protocols, shared electronic health records, and coordinated referral mechanisms between primary health centres, district hospitals and tertiary facilities. Speakers also stressed training health workers in early detection of complications and ensuring timely transfer of high‑risk cases.
The recommendations will be compiled into a policy brief and submitted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the aim of influencing national guidelines and state‑level implementation plans.
If adopted, the proposed framework could reduce maternal mortality and neonatal deaths by minimizing delays and ensuring that care is consistent across all levels of the health system.
