The Punjab Aam Aadmi Party government is expanding temple events and pilgrimage schemes to attract Hindu voters before the 2027 state elections.
With the 2027 Punjab Legislative Assembly election drawing near, political activity in the state has intensified, especially around the Hindu electorate. The Aam Aadmi Party, which currently governs Punjab, has announced a series of new religious‑cultural initiatives aimed at deepening its connection with Hindu voters.
The government’s outreach includes organising temple‑based programmes, facilitating large‑scale pilgrimages and providing logistical support for devotees travelling to holy sites. Officials say the moves are intended to broaden the party’s appeal beyond its urban, middle‑class base and to address community concerns about cultural preservation.
Political analysts view the strategy as a direct response to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s focus on the same vote bank. By foregrounding Hindu cultural activities, the AAP hopes to neutralise BJP’s advantage and secure a more diversified support base ahead of the polls.
Opposition leaders have criticised the approach, arguing that state resources should not be used for religious promotion. Meanwhile, many Hindu community groups have welcomed the increased access to temples and pilgrimage facilities, though they await details on implementation.
