The Aakar program in Chhattisgarh is training children with disabilities in life‑skills and vocational activities to promote self‑reliance.
Chhattisgarh’s non‑government organization Aakar has launched a dedicated programme aimed at making children with physical and intellectual disabilities self‑sufficient. The initiative, based in the state capital Raipur, combines therapeutic support with practical skill development to address daily living challenges.
Participants receive training in basic self‑care, communication, and mobility, alongside vocational modules such as handicraft making, computer basics and small‑scale entrepreneurship. Trained volunteers and specialists guide the children through hands‑on sessions, adapting activities to individual abilities.
Since its inception, the programme has enrolled over a hundred children from rural and urban districts. Early assessments indicate improved confidence, greater independence in routine tasks, and increased participation in community events. Parents report that their children are now able to perform personal hygiene tasks and assist with simple household chores.
Aakar plans to expand its outreach to additional districts and introduce advanced vocational tracks, aiming to create sustainable livelihood pathways for the participants as they transition into adulthood.
