The Meghalaya Express reports that 86 hawkers from the Laitumkhrah area have been moved to Dhankheti in Shillong as part of a citywide redevelopment plan.
The city administration of Shillong has completed the relocation of 86 hawkers from the bustling Laitumkhrah market to a new site in Dhankheti. The move, announced by the municipal corporation, was carried out to free up space for upcoming infrastructure projects in the historic Laitumkhrah area.
The hawkers, who had been operating in narrow lanes and on the sidewalks of Laitumkhrah, were provided with temporary stalls at Dhankheti and assistance in setting up their businesses. Officials say the new location offers better foot traffic and a cleaner environment for vendors.
While the relocation has been praised by some for improving urban aesthetics, a few hawkers expressed concerns over the distance to their usual customer base. The municipal council has promised to monitor the situation and ensure that the vendors receive adequate support during the transition.
The redevelopment plan for Laitumkhrah includes widening roads, installing street lighting, and creating pedestrian zones, which authorities say will ultimately benefit both residents and visitors.
