Eighty workers were taken into custody during a ‘jail bharo’ protest organized by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) in Jalna, Maharashtra, after they demanded better wages and working conditions.

In the early hours of Thursday, a ‘jail bharo’ protest organized by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) erupted in Jalna, a city in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district. Workers from local industries gathered to demand higher wages and improved working conditions.

Police moved in to disperse the crowd, and a total of 80 participants were taken into custody. The authorities cited public safety concerns and the need to restore order as the reasons for the arrests.

CITU officials stated that the protest was a response to long‑standing grievances against employers, and they called for a dialogue with the government to address the workers’ demands.

The incident has drawn attention to labor issues in the region, with local leaders urging a peaceful resolution and the government to engage with trade unions.

No injuries were reported, and the detained workers are expected to be released after legal procedures are completed.
