75 scholars launch project to document Khasi, Jaintia and Garo heritage in Meghalaya

A team of 75 scholars has been assembled to trace the ancestral roots of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities under a new Meghalaya research initiative.
Seventy‑five scholars have been mobilised to undertake a systematic study of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo peoples, aiming to map their historical origins and cultural lineages. The effort forms part of a broader Meghalaya project focused on preserving the state's indigenous heritage.
The selected researchers will conduct fieldwork across the hill districts where the three tribes predominantly reside, collecting oral histories, genealogical records and archaeological data. By consolidating these sources, the team hopes to produce a comprehensive reference that can support academic work and community education.
State officials have indicated that the findings will be compiled into a publicly accessible database, enabling schools and cultural organisations to integrate authentic tribal histories into curricula and exhibitions. The project is expected to run for several years, with periodic updates released as milestones are achieved.
