The Election Commission of India has removed 659 names from Meghalaya’s final electoral roll after deeming them ineligible.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that 659 electors in the northeastern state of Meghalaya have been found ineligible and omitted from the final electoral roll ahead of upcoming elections.
The determination was based on verification checks covering age, residency, duplicate entries and compliance with the Representation of the People Act. Affected voters were individually notified and given a short window to appeal the decision.
The revision comes as the state prepares for the scheduled legislative assembly polls later this year, and the ECI said the updated roll will be used for voter identification and polling. Officials emphasized that maintaining an accurate roll is essential for free and fair elections.
The commission urged any eligible citizen who believes they have been wrongly excluded to file a petition with the district electoral officer within the stipulated period.
