600 Trader Associations Call for UPI Day on Gandhi Jayanti, Cite ₹50 Cr at Risk

Around 600 trader groups have announced a UPI Day to be observed on Gandhi Jayanti, warning that about ₹50 crore in transactions could be affected and expressing concerns over possible extra charges.
A coalition of roughly six hundred trader bodies has declared that October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, will be observed as a UPI Day across India. The move is intended to draw attention to issues they say are affecting small and medium‑scale merchants who rely heavily on the Unified Payments Interface.
The groups argue that the timing coincides with a period when daily transaction volumes peak, and they estimate that close to ₹50 crore worth of trades could be jeopardised if current concerns are not addressed. Their primary grievance centres on the prospect of additional fees or operational changes that could increase the cost of each digital payment.
Organisers have called for a dialogue with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and relevant government ministries, seeking clarity on any upcoming policy shifts and urging a pause on measures that might burden traders. As of now, neither NPCI nor the Ministry of Finance has issued an official response to the coalition’s appeal.
