Around 5,000 people were moved to relief camps in Bihar after heavy rains and rising waters, linked to an avalanche in Tibet that caused flooding in neighboring Nepal.
State disaster officials said that roughly 5,000 residents from flood‑prone districts of Bihar have been shifted to temporary shelters as river levels rose sharply following heavy rainfall. The evacuation, coordinated by the district administration and the National Disaster Management Authority, began early Monday and is expected to continue until water levels recede.
The surge in water is traced to an avalanche that occurred in the Tibetan plateau last week, which unleashed a massive flow of meltwater into the Koshi river system in Nepal. The resulting floods crossed the border, swelling tributaries that feed into Bihar's floodplain.
Bihar's Chief Minister ordered the deployment of additional rescue teams, medical aid, and food supplies to the camps. Local NGOs and the Indian Army have also been mobilised to assist with evacuation and to provide clean drinking water.
Authorities warned that further rainfall could exacerbate the situation, urging residents in low‑lying areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions from officials.
