A dead monkey discovered in a hostel water tank at Assam Engineering College led to 43 students falling ill and being taken for medical care.

A dead monkey was uncovered in the water storage tank of a hostel at Assam Engineering College in Jorhat, triggering a health scare among residents. Following the discovery, 43 students reported symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal discomfort, prompting college authorities to move them to nearby hospitals for treatment.

College officials immediately shut off the water supply from the contaminated tank and arranged for alternative drinking water. Health department officials arrived on site to assess the situation, collect samples and advise on decontamination procedures.

Medical teams confirmed that the students' conditions were not life‑threatening but required observation and supportive care. No fatalities have been reported, and the college has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into how the animal entered the tank.

The incident has raised concerns about sanitation standards in student hostels across the state, with local authorities urging institutions to review water safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences.
