In Balaghat's Baiga Bahul Birsa area, records show 231 children were identified as underweight across 28 Anganwadi centres before a series of child deaths, sparking criticism of the health system's inaction.

Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh is under scrutiny after a cluster of child deaths in the Baiga Bahul Birsa tribal region. The fatalities have intensified questions about the effectiveness of local health and nutrition services.

Official records reveal that, prior to the deaths, health workers at 28 Anganwadi centres had documented 231 children with low birth weight or undernutrition. These findings were logged in the government’s monitoring system, indicating that the children were already flagged as vulnerable.

Despite the early warning, the administration did not initiate any targeted intervention, prompting community leaders and health experts to demand accountability and a review of the Anganwadi monitoring mechanisms.
