The government has signed 21 pacts aimed at strengthening regional air links under the UDAN programme, targeting increased flight services to underserved airports.
New Delhi – In a concerted effort to boost regional air connectivity, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and partner airlines have signed 21 agreements under the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) scheme. The pacts cover a range of routes connecting tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities to major hubs, aiming to make air travel more affordable and accessible.
The agreements were formalised during a ceremony attended by senior officials, airline representatives and state transport ministers. Each pact outlines specific flight frequencies, subsidies and infrastructure support required to operationalise the new services.
Under the UDAN framework, the government provides financial incentives to airlines that operate on routes with low passenger demand. The newly signed pacts are expected to activate over 30 new routes within the next 12 months, thereby increasing the number of operational airports and fostering economic growth in remote regions.
Industry analysts note that the expansion aligns with the broader goal of integrating India's hinterland with its major economic centers, reducing travel time and promoting tourism and trade. The Ministry has pledged to monitor the performance of these routes and extend further support where needed.
