19 Dead in Nagaland After Consuming Methanol-Laced Illicit Liquor

A probe confirmed that a batch of spurious liquor containing methanol caused the deaths of 19 people in Nagaland.
Earlier this week, health officials in Nagaland reported that 19 individuals lost their lives after drinking a counterfeit alcoholic beverage. Preliminary reports indicated that the victims had consumed the drink at a local gathering, unaware of its toxic composition.
A forensic investigation carried out by the state police and the forensic science laboratory identified methanol as the lethal contaminant in the seized liquor. Methanol, a poisonous alcohol often used in industrial applications, is not safe for human consumption and can cause rapid organ failure.
State authorities have launched a criminal probe to trace the source of the illicit brew and apprehend those responsible for its manufacture and distribution. Police have sealed several premises suspected of being involved in the illegal liquor trade and are urging the public to report any similar activities.
