Seventeen Asiatic lions have been recorded in Gujarat’s Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, marking the first presence of the species there in 144 years.

The Gujarat Forest Department confirmed that a pride of 17 Asiatic lions has been sighted in Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the state's western region. This is the first documented occurrence of the species in the sanctuary since the mid‑19th century, ending a 144‑year absence. Conservation officials said the lions appear to have migrated from nearby habitats, likely seeking new territory as populations grow in traditional strongholds such as Gir.

Barda Sanctuary, traditionally known for its dry deciduous forests and diverse fauna, is now under heightened monitoring to ensure the safety of both the lions and the resident wildlife. Rangers have deployed camera traps and aerial surveys to track the movement and health of the pride.

The emergence of lions in Barda is being hailed as a positive sign for Gujarat’s broader wildlife conservation strategy, which aims to create a network of protected corridors linking existing lion habitats. Authorities have urged local communities to cooperate with monitoring efforts and to report any human‑lion interactions promptly.
