Manipur police have detained 13 individuals accused of sharing and earning money from sexual content on the messaging app Telegram.
Manipur police announced the arrest of 13 persons suspected of distributing sexual material through Telegram channels and receiving payments for the same. The detainees were identified during a cyber‑crime investigation that traced the flow of money and the origin of the illicit files. Authorities say the suspects operated multiple Telegram groups where the content was posted and monetised via digital wallets.
The police statement highlighted that the arrests were made under provisions of the Information Technology Act, which criminalises the publishing and commercial exploitation of pornographic material. Investigators seized electronic devices from the accused to gather further evidence.
The crackdown reflects a broader effort by Indian law enforcement to curb online sexual exploitation, especially on encrypted messaging platforms. Officials warned that similar offences will attract stringent penalties and urged the public to report any such activity.
The 13 individuals are currently in police custody pending further judicial proceedings, and the case is being forwarded to the district court for trial.
